Evan Granowitz: The journey toward becoming a Super Lawyer

Evan Granowitz was named as Super Lawyers magazine’s Rising Star for three consecutive years, from 2009 to 2011.

What exactly is a Super Lawyer? And how does an attorney become one?

Merriam-Webster describes the word super as “exhibiting the characteristics of its type to an extreme or excessive degree” and “of high grade or quality.” From the word itself, people may already have a grasp of what Super Lawyers are. They don’t have extraordinary abilities like fictional super heroes, but they have the power to save individuals, organizations, and the world by proving right and wrong through their outstanding expertise in the field of law.

Super Lawyers magazine rates lawyers who exemplify remarkable competency, backed by their peers and professional achievements. Evan Granowitz of Wolf Group L.A and other Super Lawyers, who are spread out across 70 practice areas of law, did not get included in the list overnight. Super Lawyers go through a multi-phased selection process, which involves thorough research, peer nominations, and peer evaluations.

It is a privilege for any lawyer to be included in the magazine’s list. The objective behind this selection is to provide a credible listing of attorneys who clients can confidently seek help from. The process of choosing the Super Lawyers include:

- Creation of the candidate pool
- Evaluation of candidates by the research department; and
- Peer evaluation by practice area

Evan Granowitz: Vanguard of law

“‘Justice, and only justice, shall you pursue’ were the watchwords of his life,” says Evan Granowitz of the late US Supreme Court Justice Marcus Kaufman—his grandfather whom he has given tribute in 2003 in front of the members of the reconvened Supreme Court of California.

Throughout his life, Granowitz followed those same words and made Kaufman’s inspiration his guiding post. After he was admitted to The State Bar of California in 2004, Granowitz has shown remarkable efforts to rise above expectations. Constantly anchored to the best standards and ethics, he always goes back to the values he learned from Kaufman—values that he wants to continue to lead his life and career. As a result, Inland Empire Magazine, in its 2006 issue, heralded Evan Granowitz in its "Inland Empire's Best Lawyers" list. This came at the heels of the honor that Southern California Super Lawyers magazine bestowed on him as one of the top lawyers in Southern California. While these honors do not present yet the culmination of his success, they undoubtedly give justice to his pursuit of excellence.

With all his brilliance and vision that brought him considerable success, Granowitz today humbly lives a life which Kaufman described as “measured in terms of the ideas, values, and ideals transmitted by words or examples to family, friends, community, and perhaps the world.”

Evan Granowitz: Super lawyer up close

As grandson of the late US Supreme Court Justice Marcus Kaufman, top civil litigator Evan Granowitz knows he has to bear the weight of his grandfather’s name. Kaufman’s reputational sheen is hard to surpass, but at the least, it provides an easy inspiration for the young generation of lawyers like Granowitz.

In an apparent show of devotion to the man he dearly calls “Zaide,” Granowitz proudly shared how deep-seated Kaufman’s influence in his life and career is. During the courtroom reconvention of the Supreme Court of California in 2003 to honor the memory of Justice Kaufman, Granowitz said that the late judge “stressed to me the importance of knowing myself and constantly reevaluating and improving myself.” Displaying depth of vision and commitment to self-progress, Evan Granowitz also underscored that “it is through this type of self-knowledge that one lives a meaningful life.”

Throughout his life, Granowitz humbly points to Kaufman’s life values as his important guiding posts. Over the years, that same “passion for justice and devotion to the law” shown by Kaufman reflects on the way he shapes his life and career. Now heralded as one of the rising stars in the legal circle, Granowitz is extraordinarily proving to be made from the same mold—a true super lawyer.

But before doing so, you should first try to consider several facts about auto insurance like those posted on FunTimesGuide.com.

Are items lost due to vehicle theft covered by the auto insurance policy?

No. According to the website, it isn’t your auto insurance policy that covers lost items but your homeowner policy. The website advises to carry a rider to cover the expensive items in your vehicle and have them photographed.

Commercial insurance often involves property insurance, liability insurance, and worker’s compensation insurance.

Property insurance. This type of insurance pays for the businesses’ property losses or damages when accidents such as fire incidents or other calamities occur. Based on the businesses’ needs, owners may decide to acquire additional coverage for this type of insurance including:

• Boiler and machinery insurance
• Debris removal insurance
• Business interruption insurance
• Crime insurance

Liability insurance. This answers to the injuries that businesses cause to third parties. One of the basic cases that lawyers like Evan W. Granowitz of CA-based firm Wolf Group L.A. handle under this policy is medical malpractice where doctors can be sued by their patients if they make a mistake with their diagnosis or in carrying out a particular medical procedure. Once the claim has been proven, the insurance may help settle the litigation.

Workers’ compensation insurance. This policy protects or assists employees should they acquire on-the-job injuries.

As with every agreement, insurance policies are also susceptible to mistakes or discrepancies. BusinessInsurance.com shares the common causes of commercial insurance disputes which include:

1. Communication deficiencies. Experts, like Evan Granowitz of CA, emphasize the importance of regular communication between the policyholder and insurer because it’s one of the basic causes of disputes in terms of insurance coverage.

2. Coverage limits and exclusions. This may involve conflicting interpretations of the contract, actual coverage of the insurance, and lack of clarity on the terms and conditions.

3. Loss assessments. This usually involves the contrasting value of projected and incurred losses.

Every family encounters different issues or problems. Some of these are grave that the service of experts such as lawyers becomes in order. However, not all families are open to the idea of hiring a family lawyer because they are not comfortable with an outsider handling their personal matters or they are not financially ready for it.

According to experts, lawyers can help families not only in solving an actual problem but also in preventing problems from happening or getting worse.

Evan Granowitz is a lawyer from Wolf Group L.A. who specializes in civil litigation. He graduated from the University of California.

This very much applies when dealing with financial problems. Families can seek advice from lawyers on how to deal with fragile finances to avoid becoming completely bankrupt.

Lawyers are also helpful when dealing with:

• Prenuptial agreements – This an agreement often organized by a couple before getting married. Its purpose is to protect each other’s wishes, assets, and best interests should a divorce or separation happens.

• Child adoption – Legal experts, like Evan Granowitz, agree that adopting a child requires the expertise of a lawyer to avoid disputes from happening in the future.

• Child support – When a couple separates, the demand for continuous child support becomes inevitable. Through the help of lawyers, parties can set the provisions on the support that the child should receive.

• Divorce – Lawyers can help out in setting the final arrangements or agreements in case of divorce.

• Estate planning – This is a good way to prepare for the future. With the help of lawyers, families—particularly the title-holders or breadwinners—can organize the transfer of their wealth once they die.

Granowitz’ grandfather happens to be the 103rd Justice of the Supreme Court of California, the late Justice Marcus Kaufman. Prior to his assignment to the Supreme Court, he served as an Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeals for 17 years. He was then appointed as the Supreme Court Justice from March 1987 up to his retirement in January 1990.

Evan Granowitz had only fond memories of grandfather. “He was our adored ‘Zaidi’,” he said. “His love for us knew no boundaries.”

Apart from sparking propensity, Justice Kaufman also influenced Granowitz’s drive toward seeking excellence in the profession. Kaufman epitomized the highest level of top brass legal practice—so much that they named two awards after him, namely, the Kaufman Campbell Award and the Marcus Kaufman Jurisprudence Award. These awards are given to judges who have demonstrated the highest standards of judicial excellence in the pursuit of justice while exemplifying courtesy, integrity, wisdom, and impartiality.
